Inspiration- It was the middle of the winter and I was starting to get tired of stocking up for shows when I came across my original illustrations that I made in the 1990's to make Story Boxes. These were extra special treasures and I really wanted to make pieces that gave them a wonderful place to "Be".
Technique- I wanted to make a piece that could stand on it's own and hang on a wall so I made a cut out miniature paper version of this piece. At first it was twice as big and included parts that later became "Saving the Salamanders". Most of the parts were built on cardboard structures that I painted so I wouldn't have to cover the whole piece in clay. As I created I realized how hard it was to make very tall pieces stand on their own so I decided it needed a base- that's when I found the leftover frame in my studio that was the perfect size. The story is written out on paper on the inside of the base. My favorite part of this piece is the mushroom house- it reminds me of my "Smurf village" days back when I was 12.
