Inspiration: Yet another piece inspired by our trip to Italy. This one came from a quick sketch I did of a woman (or angel) surrounded by cupids and holding a basket on a fabulous ceiling painting. When I started I didn't know what would go in her basket or her hand. I didn't even know what kind of animals would be flying around her. As I was making the piece I decided to experiment with transferring some of my sketches onto clay. At first I thought the piece was going to be about traveling and looking at art but during the weeks I was creating this I was also spending a lot of time thinking about which direction my art would go (as most artists tend to do from time to time) so the day I finished this piece the title was surprisingly perfect.
Technique: Making the woven clay basket was a lot of fun. I was really happy with the way I was able to fold the ends over to make the "trim" along the top. The other cool parts about this piece is that the compass arrow actually turns (not necessarily to North) and the art is all removable and two sided.

Cow in Heaven - One of the sketches in her basket from my Italy trip

Another sketch in her basket.

Goddess of Fortune (We saw this image several times- I just love it!)

This sketch was done from a mosaic on a ceiling in Ravenna.
