Dream Waterfall

Dream Waterfall photo

Created December 2010

Inspiration: This one literally came from a dream.  I had a dream where I came upon a piece I had made but forgotton all about.  I studied the piece in the dream- it was a waterfall with a mermaid on an innertube and there was an otter swimming on his back down below.  When I woke up I realized I had not made this piece - yet!  It took me a few months before I was able to start it but by the time it was done I was conviniced it was very similar to the piece I dreamt about.

Technique:  The first part I created was the water fall which has a zig zagging armature of wire inside.  It was lucky it exactly fit in my large oven - at an angle.  The river below is also a covered armature but on this there is a track where the otter can actually be moved along (another idea from the dream).  I created the mermaid but she sat unattached for awhile until I figured out how to make a strong enough structure for her to hang off.  Then I thought there must be something in the world that is already made that I could use so I went Thrift store shopping. That's where I found a doll stand which I bent just a bit, covered with clay and added to the top of the piece as the "mermaid holder".

Mermaid which hangs from filament and can be moved to hang more straight or more like she is riding down the fall.

Close up of the Otter- he has a little "stick" of water that attaches to his back so you can make him float down the river.
