There are two ways to make a polymer clay knob. The first way is by painting your knob and adding one or more slices of a Silly Milly. This method may not be as sturdy as the second method that involves covering the entire knob with clay.
Painted Knob
Step 1: Paint your knob with acrylic paint and let your knob dry.
Step 2: Add one or more slices on the top of the knob.
Step 3: Bake the knob with the clay on it. Let it cool.
Step 4: Test to be sure the clay has stuck tight. If it has not carefully pry off your slices and re-stick them with super glue.
Clay Covered Knob:
Step 1: Prepare your knob. You can use any kind of knob that won’t melt at 275 degrees (test it if you aren’t sure). If you have raw wood you will want to seal it with either Elmer’s glue, paint or other wood sealer. Let dry completely. Now you have a slick surface that the clay will adhere to easier.
Step 2: Make a chunk of “half mixed color”. To do this you need to start with two or more colors. (To cover a medium size knob you will need about 1 oz. total of clay) .
Roll them into long snakes. Twirl them together (2A) and then fold them (2B) do this three or four times until you have swirly colors but not a solid color. To see what it really looks like inside make a slice, it will look different on the inside and that’s the part you will mostly use
Step 3: Form a chunk out of your “half mixed color” and slice off thin slices (about 1/8 inch thick).
Step 4: Slice off about four or more slices that are at least as thick as a nickel.
Step 5: You may want to roll the clay a little thinner. Then take these sheets of clay and wrap it around the knob, piece by piece.
Step 6: Use your finger to press into the crevasses around the edges of the knob.
Step 7: If some sections are too thick or lumpy you can trim with a thin blade.
Step 8: Use a toothpick to make the hole in the back for the screw.
Step 9: Slice up your Silly Millies and add them however you want to the knob.
Step 10: Once you have the knob the way you want it bake the whole knob at 275 degrees for 30 minutes.
