Are handmade tiles expensive?
Handmade tiles are moderately priced compared to other home improvement materials.

Floors $800 - $10,000.
(Note Clay Squared does not make floor tiles but does carry a couple of lines of floor tiles that start at $10 a sq. ft.)

Do you make your tiles on site?
Yes. We make ten distinctive tile lines in our studio. We also carry 15+ local tile artists from the Handmade Tile Association in our showroom. (click here to see the list of artists we showcase) Our studio is free to tour during our business hours; you can see how we make the tiles, glaze them and fire them in our kilns.

How much extra tile should I order when doing a custom project?
10% is what we recommend.
Can I take out samples to bring home?
Yes and we recommend it. It is important to see the tiles you like in your environment. You can take out samples for two weeks free of charge. If you are not local to come into the showroom please check out the Tile Showrooms and Galleries that carry Clay Squared tiles.

Can these tiles go outside?
Yes our red terra cotta based tiles, including the house numbers, can go outside. Our switch plate series, cannot go outside. Clay Squared terra cotta tiles have been tested for frost resistance by an engineering firm who proved them to last longer than concrete and even bricks.
Do I need an appointment to do a custom project at Clay Squared?
No you can come in whenever you are ready. We are open 11 - 5 Monday through Saturday. But we do take appointments if you would like to make one, call 612-781-6409 or e-mail josh@claysquared.com
How long does it take to make a custom tile project?
It takes three to four weeks for most project less than 50 square feet to be completed by Clay Squared.
How do I hang my art tiles on the wall?
Each tile is made with a hanging notch on the back for easy installation. Pieces can also be framed or installed into almost any setting. House numbers have holes for easy installation with screws.
Can I use the tiles as a hot plate?
Most definitely! Each tile is fired to 2000 degrees and can easily handle pans and even the hottest fireplace.
How does a handmade tile differ from a commercial tile?
The difference between machine-made versus hand-made has more to do with style than technique. Handmade tile tends to have a more historical and comfortable look to it due to the handmade and cut quality of the edges and the hand glazed nature of the tile, whereas a commercial tile tends to be more uniformly square and consistently glazed; a very modern and crisp look. Make your choice based on your personal tastes and budget.
Can I install handmade tiles myself?
Yes. You can find information about installation on our "HOW TO" page.
Does Clay Squared have a tile setter on staff to set tiles?
No, we only make tiles. But we do recommend a very qualified group of tile setters who specialize in setting handmade tile. Please visit www.handmadetileassociation.org under resources
Renting Artwork
Renting of art work is available for special events ie weddings, photo shots, and conventions. Please contact Clay Squared for more information
