The Magic Cookbook

Inspiration: Recently I have really be enjoying looking through cook books and planning menus so when I decided to start covering this mirror I went for a food theme. I have been wanting to make pieces that include an element of my earlier works called "Story scraps" so I was happy to figure out how to add the story hanging down below. To come up with ideas for the food I actually went to my cookbooks for ideas and made what I saw out of clay.
Technique: The tricky part of this piece was figuring out how to make the book that is dimensional at the bottom. I put thin cardboard inbetween the clay slabs to make sure it stayed stiff while it baked. I was happy that I had recently made a cane of a birthday cake that I could use in the cookbook. One my favorite foods to make were the leeks. I did a skinner blend and stopped before it was completly blended and it looked just like leeks! I added the bouncy food at the top by baking these pieces separatly and then using a screw to attach the wire and glueing a thin piece of clay over the screw top so it wouldn't show.
Sold: I enjoyed showing this piece through out the summer and had a lot of admirers that nearly took it home. But the lucky owner came in the day before our big Holiday Sale. He and his wife had seen the piece at the NEMAA Fall Fine Arts Show across the street the week before and he wanted to purchase it for her for Christmas. I let him have the holiday discount a day early and he went home happy and I assume she was very happy when she opened it at Christmas.
