Primavera Arrives

Created January 2008
15"x24"x5" $475
Inspiration: While in Italy I drew a sketch from a Medieval painting of a woman holding the sun and riding a cart. In the painting the cart was being pulled by strange looking horses. I made my cart being pulled by a flying lion- of course inspired by all the winged lions we saw in Venice. I imaged that the cart was some kind of magical vessel for Spring therefore the title "Primavera Arrives". (I didn't realize before my trip that Primavera means Spring in Italian).
Technique: This piece is actually three separate parts. The woman sets perfectly onto the cart when it hangs. I had planned to make her permanently attached to the cart but as I created the piece I realized she wouldn't fit in the oven baked as one and it would be easier to transport her as two pieces. The wheels were baked separatly and added on afterwards so they actually turn!
I gave this piece to my daughter for her 12th birthday to hang on the wall of her new bed room. She had been begging me for it since it's creation. I'm glad she has it as a reminder of our fabulous trip to Italy
