Fish Flyer

Created February 2008

Inspiration: This wall piece was created after our trip to Italy.  I was inspired by a particular ceramic sculpture of a woman riding a fish and all of the flowing fabrics that were in many of the Renaissance paintings.  The sculpture was of a nude figure riding a fish is a similar pose. I especially liked the way the body was turned and riding sort of side saddle.  I would like to make more sculptures of women riding other animals in this same pose.  I like the way she looks so comfortable riding along on this crazy fish ready to go where ever it takes her or she takes it.

Technique: To create this complicated pose I drew my sketch and then enlarged it to the size I wanted the final piece to be.  I then used this sketch as a template for my wire armature.  The wire runs through every part of the piece including the outline of the fish.  I made her head first baked it then made each arm and baked it.  I also made her legs and baked them before I finally got to dress her and make the fish.  She is wearing fun millefiore clothes with pictures of cows jumping over moons, scarecrows, stars, flowers and other images.  The fish tail has faces, wolves, snowmen and leaves.  Since this piece would be too big to fit in the oven all at once I baked the tail separately and added it with Apoxy sculpt (which is covered with glitter so it still looks fun on the back)
