Tile Talk November 2010

White tile is the default color of the tile world.  Look through any kitchen and bath design magazine and you will see that the majority of the kitchen backsplashes are white and many bathrooms are also.  For those of you who are not into all white tile but have a kitchen or bathroom that has perfectly good tile that you just can’t justify removing you can make small changes that will have a big effect.

The accent tile can be placed randomly on the backsplash or bathroom walls.  You can find a theme such as nature images or Cosmic Spots that could have many colors in one tile or medallions that consist of just one color.  Randomly placed tiles require as many or as few tiles as you want to add.

You can also remove whole rows of tiles and add trim pieces using a simple pattern such as a 1” pencil trim or a 2” rope trim in black going around the room in a bathroom and giving a very classic look.  To add multiple colors, create a pattern of different sized tiles using 1 x 1’s and 1 x 2’s with 3 rows.   You could place this just below your top row of tile or 3 rows down.

This is something you can do yourself if you go slow and are patient.  If not, there are plenty of professional tile installers who are very good at removing the original tiles and putting the new ones in.  You will also want to check the size of your existing tile and work within that size and possibly similar thickness in tile.

Stop feeling bad every time you look at your all white tiles (or any other color that that needs spicing up) and start thinking of the colors you want to see.
